Calligraphy without knowing Arabic — is it possible?
Yes, absolutely. Arabic calligraphy can be practiced as a visual art without understanding the meaning of the letters. Many people start that way, in love with the shapes, the curves and the rhythm of the stroke. As you progress, the letters become familiar and, if you want, you can move on to the language itself. But it is not required: a calligraphy workbook is as much an art object and a way to meditate as it is a language-learning tool.
